  • Getting waste collection down to a T

Getting waste collection down to a T

Over the last two years I’ve turned into somewhat of an evangelist. Not about a particular TV show, trend or latest fad. No, my chosen topic is, sadly, waste. Actually, I’m not sorry. In fact, those who’ve read my recent day in the life piece, which revealed how even on my honeymoon I was taking pictures of bins, will know that I am unapologetically (proudly, even) a waste nerd. And this brings me onto Egbert Taylor’s T-Lock. Whilst I’m not one for using blogs to actively promote a product, I will on this occasion on the basis that it is rapidly becoming…

Case study: Cannock Chase Council choose Taylor node° to improve residential recycling rates

Background  Cannock Chase Council was looking for ways to improve recycling rates at the Moss Road residential estate in Cannock. At the time, recycling rates were almost non-existent, with multi-occupancy dwellings making collection a logistical challenge.  The council had previously worked with Egbert Taylor to improve recycling and waste collection in the town centre, so it was aware of Taylor’s Urban Solutions range – and how it has been shown to dramatically improve recycling rates.  Two Taylor node 360° mini recycling centres were installed after a consultation period with Moss Road residents. Within a matter of weeks, recycling rates had…

The plate spinner: A day in the life of… Darren Rossiter, Purchase and Supply Chain Manager at Egbert Taylor

Unlike many of Egbert Taylor’s long timers, I’m relatively new. Well, six years in – but still, compared to some people here I’m a newbie. I joined the business from Doves Farm Foods in Hungerford. It was great, but not when you’re commuting 210 miles each day.  It wasn’t always that way, though. I moved from Kidderminster to Oxford, which is where I got the job – but then moved back to Kidderminster, where I live now, and kept the role. In my first year I drove 92,000 miles! Now, my commute to Oak Park is seven minutes – door…

  • Egbert Taylor builds UK team

    Egbert Taylor builds UK team

Egbert Taylor, the 60-year-old Worcester-based container manufacturer, has its sights set on growing its presence in the South East of England after appointing waste veteran Frank Adie, who joins the business as Area Business Manager for London. Frank, who has worked in the waste sector for over two decades, joins Egbert Taylor from Viridor where he sold waste management services to the UK’s local authorities and private sector for 11 years. Prior to that he worked with Johnston Sweepers and Munitech, where he specialised in selling aftermarket parts and waste services. Whilst majoring on London, Frank will also work closely…

The Durham dynamo: A day in the life of … Kevin Docherty, Area Business Manager at Egbert Taylor

I started at Egbert Taylor back in June 2010, having joined from the fireplace industry. I had worked at a North East-based British fireplace manufacturer for 14 years and by the time I left I was the firm’s national key accounts manager. I left the role because the firm couldn’t compete with cheap Chinese imports, which is sadly something we’re now seeing in the waste container manufacturing sector, too. This is changing in a post-Covid world, though. People have started to realise that it doesn’t matter how cheap a product or material is if you can’t even get it into…

The man who can: A day in the life of … Sukhy Sangray, Customer Service and Export Manager at Egbert Taylor

I’ve been with Egbert Taylor for two and a half years now. In that time, I’ve managed to move around the business and gain knowledge within different departments, which is great for my experience.  I’m currently heading up Customer Services, working on Export and providing support to all the Business Managers in the field. It most definitely keeps my job interesting! I commute in from Wolverhampton, which is about 45 minutes away from the Oak Park facility – a perfect amount of time to decompress from the morning mayhem that you might expect comes with having two boys, Arjan, 6,…

  • Edinburgh City Council chooses Egbert Taylor

Edinburgh City Council chooses Egbert Taylor

When Edinburgh City Council decided to launch the food collection scheme it was aware of the issues of weight and speed of decomposition. The council approached Egbert Taylor to design a bespoke solution for the project. Drawing on 50 years of research and development experience, Egbert Taylor was able to work closely with the council to develop collection points that were suitable for food collection within just two weeks of the initial briefing.

  • Great Scot!

    Great Scot!

We’re delighted to announce that Egbert Taylor has retained its place on Scotland Excel’s Supply and Delivery of Recycle and Refuse Containers procurement framework. This is incredibly important to us for the following reasons: It means that we can continue supplying local authorities in Scotland (and that councils in the country can readily buy steel bins from us) We can continue to build our longstanding relationships with Scottish local authorities – many of which have been in place since the 1960s, when Egbert Taylor (or Taylor, as it was then known) first opened its doors Given how Scotland Excel evaluates companies wishing…

It’s all about brand (and real ale): A day in the life of… Steve Tuffy, Logo Production Manager at Egbert Taylor

Like several members of the team here, I’ve been with the business for many years – 26, in fact. I began on the finishing line and have moved around the company since, which I think is one of the reasons I’ve stayed so long. It’s always interesting and there’s always something new to learn. However, my current role, which I’ve been doing for three years, is great and indulges my creative side. I’ll get on site for around 7am and power up the machines. We have industrial printers capable of printing vinyl surfaces as big as the panels that form…

Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Planner: A day in the life of … Iain Smith, Production Planner at Egbert Taylor

I’d say the team at Egbert Taylor are morning people, as the majority of us are on site and raring to go early doors.  I’ll typically start my day at 7.30am, although early mornings are now ingrained having spent six years as an Assault Soldier.  After serving in Afghanistan in 2009, and as someone whose responsibility it was to build defences and sweep for improvised explosive devices, you’re constantly on high alert. Admittedly, the shift from metal tanks to metal containers isn’t really comparable. However, as they say, ‘the early bird catches the worm’.  As Production Planner, I act as the…

  • Local authorities must re-examine the tender if they truly want to go green

Local authorities must re-examine the tender if they truly want to go green

The push to go green is everywhere; and about time, too. We’ve been plundering the planet for far too long. Something (or rather lots of things) needs to give – and judging by COP26, quite quickly, too. When it comes to delivering sustainability within the supply chain, procurement has the potential to be the driver for change. It’s arguably the engine. Or at the very least it’s the barrier at which sustainable decisions are either given the green or red light.  Local authorities, which form Egbert Taylor’s main customer base in the UK, have made great strides when it comes…

  • Bins to bikes and back again: a day in the life of Tony Nunn, General Manager at Egbert Taylor

Bins to bikes and back again: a day in the life of Tony Nunn, General Manager at Egbert Taylor

I’ve been with Egbert Taylor for 38 years now. When people ask why I’ve stayed so long, my answer is always loyalty, and the fact that Egbert Taylor has always provided countless opportunities to progress within the business. In 1982, when I first walked through the factory doors, I was a final assembly operator; my role was to bolt wheels onto the steel bins. Whilst we use air tools these days, the basic process remains unchanged, which is testament to the quality workmanship that has gone into each and every unit we’ve produced since day one.  Now, as General Manager,…

  • BIN BRITAIN!

    BIN BRITAIN!

We’re only just getting over a global pandemic, so let’s not dwell on how it impacted UK organisations overly reliant on imported bins (or materials required to build bins, for that matter) other than to say that international supply chains were hugely affected.  Instead, let’s celebrate six benefits of buying British products – with a focus on ours in particular. 1. Keeping it local 94 per cent of ALL of our raw materials comes from within a 50-mile radius of our factory. We don’t import our steel thousands of miles from China. We have it delivered from steel merchants in the Midlands that source…

The wonder of the weld: a day in the life of Lee McDermott

I’ve been at Egbert Taylor for over 20 years and I can honestly say that there’s no other manufacturer that welds to the quality we do. The whole team are time-served welders, all trained to NVQ Level 2 and above, and the intricate work that everyone can do is something that I still find impressive even to this day. It’s also this level of craftsmanship that sees us winning major orders from prominent brands such as Nissan and local authorities nationwide on a regular basis. It’s an early start, particularly for me, as I need to be onsite at 5.30am…
